WINNERS OF THE 2026 CHBA NATIONAL AWARDS FOR HOUSING EXCELLENCE

May 2026

Some projects stay with you long after the dust settles. This was one of them.

Behind this renovation were months of conversations, sketches, problem solving, demolition, rebuilding, custom craftsmanship, and countless decisions made with intention every step of the way. There were challenging moments, long days, and details that most people will never notice — but those details are exactly what matter most to us.

As a family-run design & build company from the Okanagan, receiving national recognition for something we poured so much of ourselves into feels incredibly meaningful.

What makes this award even more special is knowing it represents more than a beautiful finished space. It represents trust from our clients, dedication from our trades and collaborators, and years of refining the way we design, build, and care for every project we take on.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to create homes that truly improve the way people live.

BEFORE

BOY'S DREAM BASEMENT

When the homeowners first approached us, they didn’t come with a detailed Pinterest board or a fixed design style in mind. Instead, they gave us something far more meaningful: their full trust. They simply wanted us to create a beautiful space where their two boys could grow up — a place that would support real life, real connection, and all the changing seasons of childhood and teenage years ahead.

As a designer, having that level of creative freedom is incredibly special. It allowed me to step back and think less about trends, and more about feelings. How should this space feel after a long school day? What kind of environment encourages imagination, focus, rest, creativity, and togetherness? How do we create a basement that children genuinely want to spend time in — without relying on screens to define the space?

The vision slowly became clear: warm lighting, layered textures, custom millwork, flexible zones for play and downtime, quiet corners to recharge, and spaces designed to evolve naturally as the boys grow older. The renovation includes a full bathroom, generous integrated storage, cozy lounging areas, and thoughtful details throughout that make the basement feel fully connected to the rest of the home rather than like an afterthought below it.

As a mother of teenagers myself, I even asked my own children for their honest advice during the design process. I wanted to understand what truly makes a space feel exciting, comforting, and meaningful for kids and teenagers alike. Their perspective influenced many of the little details that helped bring authenticity into the final design.

What I love most about this project is that beneath all the finishes, cabinetry, and lighting choices, it was never really about the basement itself. It was about creating a backdrop for memories still waiting to happen — the sleepovers, sibling conversations, quiet moments, laughter, and years of growing up together.

Testimonial

We highly recommend Sitka Concept based on our experience of having them design and construct a new bedroom with ensuite bathroom at our home. They guided us all through the building process from vision to completion. They were extremely professional, detail-oriented and the quality of work was excellent. We really appreciated that they wanted to make sure we were happy with the result.
